Is donation to Ayodhya Ram Mandir eligible for tax deduction?
People who have donated or plan to donate to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, the organization responsible for constructing the temple, can avail themselves of a deduction on their income tax under section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
Deduction under Section 80G The Central Government, through its Notification No. 24/2020/F. No. 176/8/2017/ITA-I on 8th May 2020, has officially recognized the “SHRI RAM JANMABHOOMI TEERTH KSHETRA” as a site of historical significance and a renowned place of public worship. This recognition allows for tax deductions under Section 80G(2)(b) starting from the financial year 2020-21.
How much deduction can be claimed?
In simple terms, when you donate to certain approved organizations, Section 80G of the Income Tax Act allows you to deduct either 100% or 50% of the donation from your taxes. There’s no upper limit to this deduction in some cases. However, for certain donations, there’s a cap, which is set at 10% of your adjusted gross total income (GTI). Whether your donation falls into the 100% or 50% category, or if it’s capped, depends on the recipient organization and the purpose of the donation.
The Shri Ram Trust has been specifically recognized by the Central Government under Section 80G(2)(b), which means donations made to the Trust for temple renovation or repair can reduce your taxable income by 50%. So, if you donate ₹50,000, you can claim ₹25,000 as a deduction from your taxable income.
However, there’s a catch with the 50% deduction: it applies only up to 10% of your adjusted GTI. If your donation exceeds 10% of your adjusted GTI, the amount over that limit won’t count for deduction purposes. For instance, if your adjusted GTI is ₹10 lakhs, the maximum donation you can claim as a tax deduction is ₹1 lakh. Any amount you donate above this limit won’t be eligible for a tax deduction.
